All You Need to Know About Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for every Muslim, regardless of age or gender. It serves to purify the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and to feed the poor so they do not need to beg on Eid day.

When is it Due?

It becomes obligatory at sunset on the last day of Ramadan and is best paid before the Eid prayer. It is permissible to pay it one or two days in advance, or even from the start of Ramadan according to some scholars.

Amount and Type

The requirement is one "Sa'a" of the country's staple food (wheat, rice, dates). This is approx. 2.5 to 3 kg. Paying cash value is permitted by the Hanafi school and many contemporary scholars if more beneficial to the poor, which our calculator reflects.

Wisdom Behind It

  • Purifying the fast from shortcomings.
  • Spreading love and joy to the needy.
  • Expressing gratitude to Allah for completing the fast.
