Fasting Exemptions: Travelers, The Sick & Elderly
R
Ramadan Editorial Team1. The Sick (Two Types)
- Temporary Illness: (Flu, surgery) Can break fast but must "Make up" (Qada) the days later.
- Chronic Illness: (Severe diabetes, dialysis) Cannot fast. Must pay "Fidyah" (feed a poor person daily). No make up required.
2. The Traveler
Allowed to break fast if travel exceeds ~80km. Rule of thumb: If fasting is easy, do it; if hard, break it. Qada is mandatory.
3. Pregnant & Nursing
If they fear for themselves or the baby, they can break fast. They must make up the days later.
4. The Elderly
Those too old/weak to fast are exempt. They pay Fidyah (feed one poor person) for each day missed.
