The Virtues of Taraweeh Prayers

Taraweeh prayers are one of the most significant spiritual practices of Ramadan nights. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever stands (in prayer) during Ramadan out of faith and expectation of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." (Agreed upon). It is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) for both men and women, performed after Isha prayer until shortly before Fajr.

Why is it called Taraweeh?

The word "Taraweeh" comes from the Arabic root word for "rest". Early Muslims would lengthen their standing, bowing, and prostration so much that they would take brief rests after every four units (rakats) of prayer. It is a golden opportunity to listen to or recite the Quran and reflect on its meanings in a tranquil spiritual atmosphere.

Number of Rakaat: 8 or 20?

There is flexibility in Islamic jurisprudence regarding the number of rakaat, and both practices are valid:

  • 8 Rakaat: This follows the practice of the Prophet (PBUH) on most occasions, followed by 3 Witr, totaling 11. This style typically involves longer recitations.
  • 20 Rakaat: This was the established practice during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) and is followed by the majority of scholars and in the Two Holy Mosques. This style usually involves shorter recitations per rakat.

How to Pray Taraweeh at Home

If you cannot attend the mosque, praying Taraweeh at home—individually or in congregation with family—is highly rewarding:

  1. Perform Wudu and pray Isha and its Sunnah.
  2. Make the intention (Niyyah) for Qiyam (Night Prayer) or Taraweeh.
  3. Pray in sets of two rakaat, saying Salam after each set.
  4. It is permissible to hold and read from the Mushaf (Quran) if you haven't memorized much.
  5. Conclude your night prayer with Witr (one or three rakaat).
